Godzilla unleashes ‘atomic breath’ in Godzilla: King of the Monsters first look

Original Author: Clark Collis
July 12, 2018 at 06:30 PM EDTG2019
About five years have passed in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (out May 31, 2019) since the events depicted in 2014’s Godzilla. Which isn’t nearly enough time for people to stop freaking out about the discovery that they share the planet with a gargantuan lizard.

“The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting,” says director Michael Dougherty, whose previous credits include the horror movie Krampus. Godzilla hasn’t been seen since that destructive finale, “but there’s paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we’re threatened by others like his kind.”

King of the Monsters makes it enormously clear that there are other big beasts, notably the three-headed King Ghidorah, the giant insect Mothra, and another flying monster, Rodan, who in the original Japanese movies could create hurricane-force winds.
Warner Bros. Pictures

“Rodan’s been kind of a sidekick character, but I’ve always had a soft spot for him” says Dougherty. “In a lot of ways he’s more powerful than Godzilla. He’s like this winged A-bomb. I think we’ve done him justice.” But let’s not forget Godzilla himself, who reveals he has the ability to exhale “atomic breath.” Can Dougherty expand on that description? “Not without giving away too much,” he laughs. “But it takes place at a very key moment and it’s a sort of call to arms.”

The 2019 film’s human characters include Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), a scientist working for the beastie-hunting organization Monarch, and her daughter Madison, who is portrayed by Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. The pair are kidnapped by what Dougherty describes as “a mysterious organization, with their own plans for the creatures.”

The director cast Kyle Chandler as Mark Russell, Emma’s ex-husband and Madison’s father, who embarks on a rescue mission in cahoots with two more Monarch members, played by Godzilla veterans Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins. Given that Chandler also costarred in Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake of King Kong, perhaps he may stick around for the next installment in Legendary Entertainment’s “MonsterVerse”: 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Speaking of which, does Dougherty set up that face-off in his film? “It’s not like we’re bending over backwards to introduce Kong, but there’s definitely some bread crumbs,” says the director. Bread crumbs the size of boulders, we assume.

PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING Hall of Heroes Contest Entry

Hey guys, just entered my video into the Pacific Rim Uprising Hall of Heroes. It is a ultra condensed mini biography about my passion for Kaiju and why I enjoyed Pacific Rim so much. In regards to how I came up with the video, the Drift Sequence, the idea somewhat came to be by accident. I had a lot of footage of my collection but it was too long to fit in a 2 minute video and was a bit shaky due to using my Samsung Galaxy S8 phone by hand. I downloaded HitFilm 2017 and quickly learned it on the fly on how to edit video files and add some compositing for some effects and transitions. Going back to the Drift sequence, I sped up, added some effects, originally added a strong blue tint to mimic the Drift sequence but decided to lessen the tint so the audience can see the collection.  For the audio, I used Audacity to edit the audio clips. Had only 2 days before the deadline so it was a rushed project but being a first time user of HitFilm, I think it came out pretty good. Hope you guys like it!

Pacific Rim Uprising on the way

Pacific Rim has been one of the coolest entries to the Kaiju Genre. In 2018, the sequel is finally on the way! Check out the latest trailer for the upcoming film.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity's victory against the monstrous "Kaiju." Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father's legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)-who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction. Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious' Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale. Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix's Daredevil, STARZ's Spartacus) and also stars Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day.

From Celebrity Icons, "It is with overwhelming sadness we report that Haruo Nakajima has passed away on August 7, 2017 at the age of 88. More than anything else, he loved to meet and spend time with his fans, and we are very fortunate to have so many wonderful memories of those times when he visited with all of us. Our deepest condolences to his dear daughter, Sonoe Nakajima."

Personal message from GForever:
Today is a sad day as I woke up learn that my childhood hero has left this earth. My prayers go out to Sonoe and her family during this difficult time.

To my only hero, Haruo Nakajima (Godzilla), I am grateful to have met you three times and being able to share many memories in my life from the movies to the conventions which lead to friendships across the globe. You have always enjoyed meeting your fans and the last time we met was in my hometown in Boston where I had the privilege to be your "Minya" at the Hynes Convention Center. Without you, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I have always looked up to you. You kept me living, fighting, and striving to be the best that I can, going up against all odds and never giving up. Thank you for being my God, my hero, and a good friend. You will be missed dearly. May you rest in peace knowing your legacy will continue to live on. GODZILLA FOREVER!

Shin Godzilla North America Advance Tickets are available

Hey Folks, as you are probably aware, Shin Godzilla will be playing in select theaters for limited release from October 11 to October 18, 2016. The movie will be in Japanese with English subtitles. Check out this Google Map locator of all the theaters that are showing Shin Godzilla. I find this to be more accurate than the locator on Funimation's site as there is one theater in Massachusetts that is showing the movie but is not appearing on their locator. All G-Fans unite and support this movie whether or not you like the new design. Rally up your friends and show them the power of the Japanese Godzilla.

The official Funimation USA website for the movie is located here: http://www.funimationfilms.com/movie/shingodzilla/
